Overview
I hold the following statements as guiding principles:
- Wiccan Rede: An it harm none, do what you will.
- Namaste: the deity in me salutes the deity in you.
- Witchcraft Tenets: Balance, Harmony, Trust, Humility, Tolerance, Learning
Responsibilities to Client
- I
shall respect and seek to preserve the autonomy and dignity of each
person.
- I
shall utilize only those practices for which I am qualified by personal
experience, training or education, keeping in mind that I am not a
professional counselor, nor have I been trained as one.
- I
shall strive to be aware of how my own belief systems, values, needs, and
limitations affect my work.
- I
shall conduct counseling in the spirit of service to others and to my
deities, not as an exercise in satisfying my own ego or needs.
- I
shall practice openness and respect towards people whose beliefs are in
apparent contradiction to my own. I accept all paths, including those that do not accept my path.
- I
shall affirm the religious and spiritual freedom of all persons and I will
show sensitive regard for the moral, social, and religious standards of
clients and communities. I will avoid imposing my beliefs on others, although I may express them when
appropriate in the pastoral counseling process.
- I
shall seek the counsel of other counselors and Pagan clergy to help ensure
the appropriateness and efficacy of my practices.
- I
shall serve all persons without discrimination regardless of religion,
faith group, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, age, or
disability.
- I
shall be accountable for maintaining the integrity of the pastoral
relationship. I will not use my position with, or knowledge of, another
for personal gain. I shall refrain from emotional, financial, sexual or any other form of exploitation.
- I
shall make referrals or obtain consultations when in the best interests my
counselees and maintain relationships with other counselors, clergy, and
teachers in order to foster these practices.
- I do
not abandon or neglect clients. If I am unable, or unwilling to provide help or continue a counseling
relationship, every reasonable effort shall be made to arrange for
continuation of counseling with another appropriate individual.
- I
shall make only realistic statements regarding the pastoral counseling
process and its outcome.
- In my
role as counselor, I will act responsibly in the use of ritual or magic on
behalf of my counselees and in recommending its use by my counselees. I will provide suitable preparation,
including explanations and, where needed, training.
- Counseling
relationships are continued only so long as it is reasonably clear that
the clients are benefiting from the relationship.
- While
acknowledging the complexity of some pastoral relationships, I will avoid
exploiting the trust and dependency of clients. I will avoid those dual
relationships with clients that could impair my judgment, compromise the
integrity of the counseling, and/or use the relationship for my own gain.
- I
shall respect the privacy and confidentiality of my counselees. If I need to discuss a client with
another counselor, I will first get permission of the client. Prior to discussing a client with
another counselor, I will also verify that counselors commitment to
confidentiality.
- I
shall not use these standards of confidentiality to avoid intervention
when it is necessary, e.g., when there is evidence of abuse of minors, the
elderly, the disabled, or the physically or mentally incompetent.
Responsibilities to Community
- I
shall endeavor to enrich the mission and presence of the religious
communities with which I work and am affiliated, and to be a positive
representative for my faith and community.
- If the
time and energy demands of one individual causes substantial drains on the
time and energy available for the rest of the community, I will insist
that the individual find another counselor.
- If
there is conflict among two or more members of the community, such as a
marital dispute or personal conflict, I will not intercede on behalf of
any one of the individuals. I may be called upon to act as mediator
between the individuals.
- If I
believe the issues presented by one individual put the community at risk,
I will keep the welfare of the whole community foremost in my mind.
Responsibilities to Profession
- I
shall establish and maintain relationships with other counselors, clergy
and teachers to foster partnerships, cooperation and an environment
conducive to continued education.
- I
shall offer counsel to other counselors, clergy, and teachers when there
is need.
Responsibilities to Spirit/Universe/Deity
- I will
act in a manner consistent with my beliefs and in honor to my
deities.
Responsibilities to Self
- I will
manage my personal life in a healthful fashion and seek appropriate
assistance for my own personal problems or conflicts.
- I
shall pursue ongoing personal growth and development in theology,
spirituality, pastoral skills, and other areas that enhance my proficiency
as counselor, clergy and teacher.
